Current events Maps and Images.

California wildfires. National Interagency Fire Center has resources including updated maps showing fire locations. Fire incident locations map in Google Earth link also available (free Google Earth viewer needed). NASA has a video from the Space Shuttle Discovery.  Other mapping and imagery is also available in the Life on Earth features.

Earthquake and tsunami resources. USGS Earthquake Hazards Program maintains event pages. Recent events updated regularly.

Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran; London, Katrina, Rita, and others. Imagery and maps and other current event images at the Perry-Castaņeda site (see below at Map Sources)

DigitalGlobe Gallery of images of places in the news for use by media and other institutions related to recent events. Note usage policy.

Research tools and writing resources

RefWorks (M.U. only) Import references from online databases, use them for writing papers, automatically format the paper and the bibliography in several choices of styles.

LabWrite Resources Excel tutorial, guidelines for graphs, tables, lab reports, etc.

Suggestions for Authors of Reports of the USGS Writing style guide for reports of the U.S. Geological Survey. The STA is a basic scientific style guide for scientists, students, and editors. It includes citation styles, report organization, table and graph design, and details of map design.

E-print network A gateway to over 16,100 Web sites and databases worldwide, containing e-prints in basic and applied sciences, including geosciences and environmental sciences, as well as multidisciplinary fields.

U.S. Geological Survey Information, data, mapping, publications. Digital images of archived publications can be viewed from this list, using the LizardTech DjVU plug-in. Click here to download.

U.S. Minerals Information Site for the Minerals Information Team of U.S. Geological Survey. Includes Minerals Yearbook. Yearbook is in three volumes covering Metals and Minerals, Domestic Area Reports on States and Puerto Rico, and International Area Reports by country and region. Reports are in PDF and require free Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click here to download.

The Virtual Geography Department Project.

Journal of Maps. An online journal for the publication of maps produced as scholarly research. Free registration is required. Note for students: A biennial Student Edition is planned to publish maps produced by university undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Name servers

GNIS, The Geographic Names Information System, developed by the USGS in cooperation with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN), contains information for almost 2 million physical and cultural geographic features in the United States and territories, and Antarctica.

GNS, the GeoNet Names Server, the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names' database of foreign geographic names.

Historical Landscapes of the Miami. An initiative of the Myaamia Project to identify the lands and landscape names as the Miami people knew them before European settlement of the region.

Panama Canal deforestation. From New York Times Science article, Tuesday, May 24, 2005, about water and forests in the Canal area.

David Rumsey Map Collection Over 10,000 images. Rare 18th- and 19th-century maps of North and South America. The world, Europe, Asia and Africa are also represented. Note: browser must be able to allow pop-up windows.

Map Collections: 1500-2004 Digital images of maps of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress. Featured are Americana and cartographic treasures of the Library. Also available are copyright free contemporary maps of countries and regions of the world.

Oddens' Bookmarks A comprehensive, searchable and browsable site for map images, and information about maps and mapping on the internet. Find maps, map collections, information about maps, sellers and distributors, government agencies, university departments, and more. Roelof Oddens is at University of Utrecht, Netherlands.

Perry-Castaņeda Library Map Collection A collection of JPEG, GIF, and PDF map images, which the University of Texas at Austin Library has scanned and made available on the Web. Many of the maps were originally produced by agencies of the federal government.

World Atlas of Panoramic Aerial Images. Provided by California Geological Survey, a gallery of views from Landast Satellite imagery. Not georeferenced or rectified. Includes galleries of Central Asia and Middle East.
