    Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library - Launched in 1994, the Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library is an extensive portal to over 10,000 Internet resources compiled by scholars, librarians, and professionals from 13 countries. Updated regularly; currently hosted by the Australian National University.

    Portal to Asian Internet Resources - The Portal to Asian Internet Resources (PAIR) is a well-maintained and user-friendly site that includes more than six thousand professionally selected, cataloged and annotated online resources. Compiled by scholars and bibliographers at OSU, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Searchable by region or keyword.

    Asia Society - The Asia Society is an international organization dedicated to strengthening relationships and deepening understanding among the peoples of Asia and the United States. This website is a portal to Asia Source, a comprehensive resource with news updates, in-depth interviews on current affairs, and country profiles, and Asia Foods, which is a resource on Asian cuisines featuring searchable databases of hundreds of recipes and glossary terms.

    Asian Net - This site provides comprehensive information on Asian business, trade, and products and offers links to individual countries.

    ABYZ News Links: Asia Newspapers and News Media Guide - Links to news sources from Asia, arranged by country and by region. Indicates the language of the news source (ENG, JPN, ZHO, etc).

    Internet East Asian History Sourcebook - Part of the Internet History Sourcebooks project at Fordham University. Offers encyclopedic, general information on selected topics on China, and to a lesser extent, Japan and Korea.

    Internet Guide for Chinese Studies - Well-selected, annotated, ranked, and frequently updated virtual library of numerous electronic resources relating to China and Chinese scholarship. Maintained by Dr. Hanno Lecher of Leiden University.

    China the Beautiful - Extensive web portal to many Chinese cultural topics, frequently updated and maintained by professor emeritus Dr. Ming L. Pei. "China the Beautiful is a web site on the internet serving as a primary resource site for the Chinese classics, arts, history, literature, poetry, calligraphy, and paintings, and all that is beautiful and glorious in the Chinese culture."

    Chinese Art and Architecture - An annotated bibliography of recent works written in Western languages on Chinese art and architecture, prepared by the Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution.

    China Vitae - China Vitae is a resource of information for more than 2500 current Chinese political, military, economic, business and academic leaders. The extensively cross-referenced biographical database is designed to be an indispensable research tool for those who closely follow activites in China

    Chinese Cinema - This site is devoted to the studies and appreciation of Chinese cinema. Besides history, news, and visual materials about Chinese cinema, it also contains a bibliography of selected publications in English on Chinese cinema so as to further advance the studies of the subject. Page maintained by Dr. Shaoyi Sun of the University of Southern California.

    Classical Historiography for Chinese History - Extensive bibliography of resources compiled by one of the foremost scholars of Chinese History over a period of 10+ years. It is particularly strong in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Created and maintained by Dr. Benjamin Elman at Princeton University.

    Modern Chinese Literature and Culture Resource Center - This resource center contains, among other things, bibliographies of mostly English-language materials on modern Chinese literature, film, art, and culture and is maintained by Kirk A. Denton at the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, The Ohio State University, in conjunction with the journal Modern Chinese Literature and Culture.

    Chinese Text Initiative - The Chinese Text Initiative (CTI) is a collection of sites, each centered upon a specific canonical Chinese classical text-—most of which are from the Tang period (618-907) and earlier. Four of the six featured texts are accompanied by partial or complete English translations and may be of interest to world history teachers. Sponsored by the University of Virginia.

    Stockton's Links to Japan - Extensive portal with some very good and hard-to-find links on arts, business, education, government, travel, and other topics.

    Teaching and Learning About Japan - Encyclopedic website of Japanese cultural topics with well-written articles and relevant links. Includes aspects of traditional and popular culture. Maintained by Cleveland State University.

    Web Japan - General, easy to use website that provides up-to-date information about geography, politics, economy, society, culture, travel, sports, and science in Japan.

    Anime Check-List - Comprehensive, searchable database of all existing anime produced in Japan since 1917. Includes a list of anime-related links and a statistics generator.

  • Business, Finance, Politics
    Nikkei Interactive Net - Daily political and economic news from Japan.

  • Japanese Gardens
    The Japanese Garden - Excellent virtual tour of the major gardens and temples in Kyoto, by a professor emeritus at Bowdoin College. Multiple photographs from different angles of each site, as well as a history of Japanese gardens, a discussion of key design elements, a glossary, and a bibliography.

  • Literature
    Aozora Bunko - An extensive online collection of full-text books that are no longer in copyright. Texts are in Japanese, and you can download them with or without rubi (phonetic readings of kanji). Great resource for students of Japanese.

    Japanese Text Initiative - An online collection of out-of-copyright classical, pre-modern, and modern Japanese texts, sometimes with English translations. Most of the texts include furigana for kanji.
