May 30 - Charles Anderson program

Rob Tolley to Present “From Old Miami to Gettysburg: The Orations of Charles Anderson” on May 30

Rob Tolley, senior lecturer of anthropology at Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana, will present “From Old Miami to Gettysburg: The Orations of Charles Anderson” on Friday, May 30 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in 320 King Library, on Miami University’s Oxford campus.

Tolley will explore the role of Charles Anderson (A.B., Miami University, 1833) in the history of Miami University, the state of Ohio, and the nation.  His remarks will be based on a collection of Anderson's personal papers that he recently discovered by happenstance.  The collection includes handwritten copies of Anderson's 1833 graduation oration and his "address" delivered at Gettysburg on the same day as Abraham Lincoln's speech in 1864.

A student of Robert Hamilton Bishop and William Holmes McGuffey during his Miami years, Anderson went on to become a lawyer, farmer and politician.  When Ohio Governor John Brough died in office, Anderson became Ohio's 27th governor, serving from August 29, 1865 until January 8, 1866. After leaving his position as governor, Anderson returned to his Dayton, Ohio law practice.  He moved to Lyon County, Kentucky in 1870 and died in Kuttawa, Kentucky on September 2, 1895.

Holding undergraduate and graduate degrees from Miami University, Tolley is an active field researcher, conducting archaeological survey work throughout the West.
