Miami University Libraries

The Miami University Libraries have a new website. This older version is currently still active, to support some older services, but we'd recommend using the new one.

RefWorks FAQs

Q) Is RefWorks compatible with my computer?
A) Yes, RefWorks is compatible with Windows (PC), Mac, and UNIX based platforms.

Q) What citation (journal) styles are available with RefWorks?
A) Over 200 citation styles are available with RefWorks. If you change your mind about the journal format you want to use, with a click of a mouse you can change your citation (journal format) style.

Q) I've been using Endnote (or Reference Manager) for the past few years. Can I export those citations to RefWorks?
A) Yes! RefWorks has an import feature that allows you to import your references from other citation programs.

Q) What happens if Miami University decides to cancel their subscription to RefWorks or I leave the university or graduate - what will happen to my data?
A) You will be notified prior to the cancellation. At that time, you can purchase an individual subscription to RefWorks for a little amount per year or, if you prefer, you can export your entire database in a format that is compatible with other bibliographic software. You can also export the data in a delimited format to use in some other type of database program.

Q) Can I link to files on my hard drive through RefWorks?
A) Yes. See the instructions at http://www.refworks.com/Refworks/help/Linking_References.htm.

Q) I'm getting a request for a group code when I try to log into my account remotely. What's the problem?
A) A group code should not be required. All you should ever need to know is your Unique ID and password, as well as your RefWorks account login information. Always make sure you get to your RefWorks account through the Miami Libraries’ website.

Q) How does Write-N-Cite work? What about remote access to Write-N-Cite?
A) Write-N-Cite is a feature which allows you to access your references in RefWorks while working within Microsoft Word. Write-N-Cite allows you to insert citation placeholders and when you are ready to add a bibliography to the end of the document, Write-n-Cite will create a bibliography and properly format your in-text citations based upon only those references that have been inserted into your Word document. To use Write-N-Cite with RefWorks you must download a small utility program to your computer. Click for more information and download.

Q) I want to write my paper off line. How do I manually insert the citations in the text?
A) If you are a Windows user you can download and use the offline version of Write-N-cite. Another option which works for both Windows and Mac is to create a manuscript offline, you must first print out the manuscript or save it as a file. Your printout or file will provide you with the RefIDs. To manually insert citations in the text where you want to cite the reference, use two open curly brackets "{{" followed by the Reference ID number followed by two closed curly brackets "}}". For multiple citations in the same location separate the Ref ID number with semicolons: {{34;45;23}}. You will need to go back online to generate the bibliography or reference list.

Q) Is there training available for RefWorks?
A) See the RefWorks tutorial page for links to a number of excellent tutorials, and guides. You can also register for RefWorks' webinars or attend the Libraries' TIM Workshop on RefWorks. For additional information, contact a Librarian.

Q) When I try to export references from an online database with a RefWorks option, nothing happens. What do I do?
A) You have a couple of options. First, you can check to see if the pop-up window blocker is set on your browser or personal firewall or security software.
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools - Internet Options- Privacy then see if the Pop-up blocker is checked. If checked, you can add www.refworks.com as an allowed site. If you’ve added the Google toolbar to Internet Explorer, the pop-up blocker may be set. Select Options. Under Accessories select the Options tab, and turn off the Popup Blocker. For Firefox, go to Tools - Options - Content then uncheck the pop-up window blocker option or add www.refworks.com as an allowed site. You can also save your references as a text file (.txt) and import into RefWorks.

Q) Why doesn't Write-N-Cite work on my computer?
A) Write-N-Cite is only compatible with Windows PC users, using Microsoft Internet Explorer and running Microsoft Word 2000 or higher or Mac users using OS 10.X version 3 or higher and Word for Mac 98 or higher. Users with other operating systems, browsers or word processing software should use the One Line/Cite View feature which works very similarly to Write-N-Cite. See the online help in RefWorks or the RefWorks Tutorial for more information on Write-N-Cite or One Line/Cite View.

Q) Can I export citations from Google Scholar into Refworks?
A) Yes! You may export citations from Google Scholar into RefWorks one at a time, or, if you install the Zotero plugin, you may import multiple Google Scholar citations at a time. Go to the Handouts on Exportation of Records from Selected databases into RefWorks page to see the steps to export.

Q. How many references can I store in RefWorks? Is there a limit?
A) No, you may save an unlimited number of references within your RefWorks account.
