Abstract:
Oscar, an otterhas a slide that gets blocked by a beaver and he has to make a new slide. He is told not to make a slide in the mountains, but instead of listening he makes the slide up in a mountain far from home. A fox watches Oscar and chases him down the mountain, until he runs safely into his home.

5. Bennett, Kelly (2005). Not norman: A goldfish story. New York: Candlewick Press.

Abstract:
When a boy gets Norman, a goldfish, for his birthday he is disappointed. He wants an energetic pet with which to run and play. He makes a plan to take Norman back to the pet store and get another pet. After show and tell at school, he decides to keep him. Norman likes his music and makes him laugh; besides any other pet just wouldn’t be the same, they would not be Norman.

Mrs. K teaches Ann's third grade class. In class they are explorers, scientists, poets, and astronauts. They are always learning something new. One day, Mrs. K doesn't come to school. The students learn that she is in the hospital with cancer. For the rest of the year the third grade has a substitute. On the last day of school, Mrs. K comes back to surprise her students.

Abstract:
Ruby is known for wearing red and being an exceptionally bright student. Even during a time in China when "...most girls were never taught to read and write". However, Ruby's grandfather hires a teacher to come to the house, making it possible for any grandchild living in the house to learn. This initiates a desire in Ruby to attend university, a place that women in China were not encouraged to go. *Based on a true story of the author's grandmother.

16. Crews, Donald (1992). Shortcut. New York: Greenwillow.

Abstract:
Train tracks run right behind Big Mama's house in Cottondale, Florida. Every summer the children go to visit her. They are told time and time again to stay off the tracks. They are in a hurry one day and decide to walk along the tracks for a shortcut. When they get to a point where they can't turn back, a train appears.

Otto has trouble paying attention in school. He is a young car who honks his horn during class, races away from the gas pumps causing a spill, and several other hyperactive behaviors. His parents take Otto to visit a special mechanic in order to get medicine to help control his behavior.
