Abstract:
Dan runs into a problem when he has no money and no time to buy his mom a birthday present. He can’t think of anything and feels hopeless. One day, a bully puts a slimy, gross worm in Dan’s pocket on the walk to school. His teacher, Mrs. Stewart, places the worm in a jar, and all the children become interested. Dan even starts to like the worm and decides to give it to his mom to help her garden. She thinks the worm is a great gift.

Abstract:
God created the world with water, trees, land, animals, and people, and thought he had done a great job. God's angel Shaniqua told God that the world looked too boring. God then set out to make the world more interesting. First he made grass but that did not help much so God started singing and making beautiful music. When the flowers complained about being lonely, God called on Shaniqua to sing. Her voice was so pretty that the planets and starts started crying. The people on earth were very happy with their world and so was God.

23. Mora, Pat (1997). Tomas and the library lady. New York: Alfred A. Knopf.

Abstract:
Tomas and his family are migrant workers who travel between Iowa and Texas to find work. Tomas loves to listen to his grandfather's stories but he knows all of them and decides to go to the library to learn some new stories. The librarian welcomes Tomas in and offers him cold water to drink and stories to read. Tomas visits the library lady whenever he can and even teaches her some of his native language, Spanish. When Tomas' family must leave the library lady gives Tomas a book to take with him.

Abstract:
For years, the people of Triple Creek have been glued to their televisions. That is until Aunt Chip opens up the world of reading to her young nephew. Reading spreads from child to child until one of them accidentally opens the dam. The flood that follows destroys the TV tower and the adults are lost without their TVs. Guess who teaches them to read?
