Abstract:
With the help of his family, a farmer grows an oversized turnip and presents it to the King. The King gives the farmer a cartload of gold for his turnip. The King's gift entices a squire to present the King with a horse, but the reward is not what the squire has in mind.

2. Alexander, Lloyd (1995). The house gobbaleen. New York: Dutton Children's Books.

Abstract:
After a stroke of bad luck, Tooley calls up on the "Friendly Folk" to help him improve his luck. When Hooks comes to the door, Tooley invites him in the house despite warnings from his cat. Hooks takes advantage of Tooley and makes his luck even worse than before-until the house gobbaleen scares Hooks away.

3. Alexander, Lloyd (1972). The four donkeys. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston.

Abstract:
The Baker, Shoemaker, and Tailor all wanted to go to the fair to sell their goods, but had trouble making it there. After their donkey collapsed, they had to pull the cart. They were all rude to each other, but when they were all faced with the same problem they figured out a helpful solution.

4. Aylesworth, Jim (1999). The full belly bowl. New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers.

Abstract:
After being captured by a fox, a wee man is rescued and nurtured by a very old man for three days. In appreciation of the old man's kindness, a bowl is left on his porch with a note about its special powers. The beautiful full, belly bowl multiplies any item placed in it. This brings both happiness and trouble to the old man.

Abstract:
A young girl feels that her family is so poor that rich people wouldn't even sit at her family's table. She holds a meeting with her family to discuss the money her family has. During the meeting she discovers how rich her family really is. She also learns the important things in life such as, family is more valuable than money itself.

Abstract:
After the first snow, all the birds that do not fly south for the winter are left hungry. The birds learn to compromise and share when a christmas tree full of tasty treats is put up in town.

7. Carle, Eric (1977). The grouchy ladybug. New York: HarperCollins.

Abstract:
A grouch ladybug and a friendly ladybug fly to a leaf with aphids. The grouchy ladybug tells the friendly ladybug to go away. They decide to fight, but the grouchy ladybug goes on to look for even bigger food. Every animal the grouchy ladybug encounters is not big enough until the whale slaps her across the ocean. At six o'clock, the grouchy ladybug returns to the leaf. The friendly ladybug saves the grouchy ladybug some aphids, and the two ladybugs become friends.

A little old woman walks into town with a basket of eggs her hen has laid. As she walks she thinks about her future and about how rich she'll be because of these eggs. When she drops all of the eggs she realizes she became too proud.

14. Dunbar, Joyce (1999). The bowl of fruit. Cambridge, MA: Candlewick Press.

Abstract:
Pand and Gander have a big bowl of fruit to share. They each take their favorite fruit, but Gander's pomegranate takes much longer to eat than Panda's pear. As Panda finishes his piece, he takes another, and another. By the time Gander is done with his pomegranate there are only a few cherries left. Even though sharing is hard, the friends share the last few cherries.

Abstract:
Petunia is a goose who eats everyone else's food and never touches her own because she thinks the other food is better. Petunia decides to go up a windy hill to get the "better" grass, but others warn her not to because of wild animals. After escaping from the wild animals, she realizes that her grass is just as good.

Abstract:
Chestnut Cove is a town of strange events, but caring and helpful townspeople. That all changes when King Milford decrees that the one who can grow the largest watermelon will inherit the kingdom. Pretty soon, everyone becomes too greedy to even talk to one another, and it takes a big event to get them back to normal.

Abstract:
When grandmother leaves for Greenland on a porpoise, her family cleans out her room. While cleaning, they find a nest which has hatching bird eggs. The family eventually set the pigeons free, but they get something in return.

A thief sees a farmer bury gold by a magical tree. The thief steals the gold and runs away with it. The thief is followed by the tree's Hey Hey man. The wood spirit tricks the thief into returning the farmer's gold.

Abstract:
Jan Van Amsterdam is a well known baker. People travel from all over to buy his goods. When he begins to get greedy, he starts to use less ingredients in his cookies. When a woman asks for a bakers dozen, he only gives her 12 She puts a curse on him and his baked goods. When he finally realizes that a bakers dozen is 13, the curse is broken.

21. Garrison, Christian (1976). Flim and flam and the big cheese. Scarsdale, NY: Bradbury Press.

Abstract:
Two brothers, one fat and one thin, live together. Flam eats all the food and leaves nothing for Flim. So Flim decides to trick Flam into drinking the pond by placing a piece of cheese in the middle of it. Flam drinks the whole pond not realizing the cheese was the reflection of the moon. When Flam cannot move, Flim eats a very satisfying meal.

Jan is a stingy baker. When a woman enters his cookie shop and asks for a bakers dozen, Jan refuses to give her an extra free cookie. The woman puts an evil spell on Jan. When Jan finally gives her a bakers dozen of cookies, the spell is broken.
