Abstract:
When Henry moves into the old, run down house in the neighborhood, all of the neighbors hope he will fix it up and make it look nice like the other homes. When he doesn't, they petition to make him "clean up or get out." It is only after he leaves voluntarily that they discover how much they miss him.

A beetle finds a home in a community of insects and small woodland creatures and makes many friends. One day the discarded remnants of a human's picnic makes a mess of their mushroom house neighborhood. Wild and energetic, Verdi the snake is afraid of turning green and becoming lazy like the older snakes. To keep the green away, Verdi jumps and slithers all around the forest. One day Verdi does turn green, but he realizes it is the snake inside, not the color outside, that makes a great snake!

Crickwing is different from all the other cockroaches. He likes to create sculptures and has a twisted wing. Crickwing is tired of being bullied by the bigger animals in the forest and mistakenly takes his anger out on the leaf-cutter ants, learning a valuable lesson in return.

23. Child, Lauren (2001). What planet are you from, Clarice Bean?. Cambridge, MA: Candlewick Press.

Abstract:
Clarice Bean is having a hard time coming up with an idea for her project on the environment. To make matters worse, she is paired up with her tag-along neighbor, Robert Granger. Her situation looks hopeless until her brother becomes an ecowarrior in an effort to "free the tree" from being cut down in their neighborhood. Robert and Clarice become ecowarriors themselves, saving the tree and their project.

Abstract:
Mr. King's fifth grade students work on a project to restore Pigeon Creek to its original beauty. They cannot believe the water was once clear and had fish. They learn about the life cycle of salmon, grow their own salmon, and release them into their now clear Pigeon Creek. The next fall they look for their salmon to return.

Neeny and her mom move to the big city on the mainland. They leave behind the rest of their family including Neeny's best friend, her cousin. Neeny comes back for a visit but she has changed. However, on her last night on the island Neeny once again has fun with her cousin.
