Abstract:
Two young boys longed to be at sea, so their parents took them on a trip. Their parents were called off on an emergency but the boys stayed. They encounter a series of problems, but the crew and the boys survive.

Abstract:
When Annie wakes up in the morning, she is relieved to find her euphoric mother in the kitchen. They share a healthy breakfast, then her mother helps her get ready for school. After a fun day at school, Annie comes home to an angry and yelling mother. Annie copes by calling her grandmother to talk about her feelings. She takes care of herself and maintains a positive attitude with happy thoughts. She uses effective strategies to accept her mother’s bipolar disorder.

Abstract:
Eleven year old Jamie helps his stepfather, Butch, pick corn one autumn day. When the corn picker becomes plugged up, Butch attempts to climb off the tractor but gets caught and is seriously injured. Jamie saves Butch's life by turning the corn picker off and running for help. Jamie keeps the farm running while Butch recovers from the accident.

Abstract:
The silk trains that constantly cross the tracks near Emma's house fascinate her and spark her imagination of having silk clothing of her own. Her whole town is set into a frenzy when one of the trains derails, and in her attempt to snag a beautiful swatch of red silk in the river, she is swept away. Her rescue is dramatic and exciting.

Victor's favorite cat Charlie dies. Victor is very sad that his cat died. He ends up getting a new kitten named Shelly. Victor doesn't understand why Shelly doesn't do the same things that Charlie did. Victor soon discovers that even though Shelly is a different cat and is not like Charlie, she is unique and his new favorite pet.

15. Swanson, Diana (2003). The balloon sailors. New York: Annick Press.

Abstract:
When bickering princes take the throne, the kingdom is split in two by a wall so that each brother rules half. The kingdom is divided and it is illegal for people to cross the wall. Since Tamala and Abalon are forbidden to see their grandmother and cousin on the other side of the wall, they decide to float over it in a hot air balloon. They work with their parents to collect materials, build the balloon, and wait for the perfect weather conditions. The family departs during the night, escapes military fire from soldiers, and surprises their relatives in the morning. This adventure is loosely based on the true story of two East German families sailing over the Berlin Wall in their own hot air balloon in 1979.

Abstract:
While a dogcatcher is in the barber shop, his wagon full of dogs outside the window starts rolling down Huckleberry Hill. As the wind blows harder and harder, the wagon rolls faster and faster. The door eventually flies open and the dogs are free.

18. Zimelman, Nathan (1970). So you shouldn't waste a rhinoceros. Austin, TX: Steck-Vaughn.

Abstract:
Maxel's family tries to find a way to get Maxel out of a bubble. Someone suggests getting a rhinoceros to pop it, but by the time the animal gets there, Maxel is already out. His grandmother tells him he shouldn't waste a rhinoceros, so he should blow more bubbles.
