7. Brenner, Barbara (2004). One small place in a tree. New York: Harper Collins.

Abstract:
A bear scratches the bark of a tree; beetles form small openings; a woodpecker eats the beetles; bacteria takes over the tree and a small hole is formed. Although the tree is dying, this small hole is still a home for many animals. Both living and dying trees are important as shelter and home to living organisms.

A little boy is told by his father that things are going to change. The boy imagines the tea kettle growing a tail and other ridiculous things to explain what his father said. However, when his mother and father arrive home with a new baby he realizes what his father meant about things changing.

Abstract:
Arthur's parents say he may have a puppy if he proves that he is responsible. Arthur decides to get a job pet sitting a neighbor's dog and eventually many pets. Finally when the neighbor comes home, she finds her dog and new puppies. She pays Arthur ten dollars and gives him one of the new puppies to care for himself.

Abstract:
A stork builds a nest on a chimney during spring. Soon the stork is joined by another stork and they have babies. Suddenly it grows cold, so the storks head south for the winter. In the spring, the storks move back and the cycle starts over again.

Mr. King's fifth grade students work on a project to restore Pigeon Creek to its original beauty. They cannot believe the water was once clear and had fish. They learn about the life cycle of salmon, grow their own salmon, and release them into their now clear Pigeon Creek. The next fall they look for their salmon to return.

19. Coste, Marion (1993). Nene. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press.

Abstract:
The female nene keeps watch over her eggs, while the male nene stays close by watching for danger. When the eggs finally hatch, the birds must keep close watch over the baby goslings so that no cats, rats, or mongooses eat the young. The family must stay in this area for a few months, waiting until the babies get their flying wings. Not all of the goslings survive the wait, but when all the new feathers grow in, the family flies from the land near the ocean to the mountain.

Abstract:
Imagine finding turtle eggs in your sandbox! When a mother diamondback terrapin lays eggs in a young girl’s sandbox, the girl becomes a “turtle-sitter” to help the babies safely hatch. She raises the teeny hatchlings until they become big enough to fend for themselves in the wild. Then, with the help of experts, she releases them. Along the way, she learns about these unique animals and that she has made an important contribution to their survival.

Abstract:
A little girl name Nona is born, and her Grandma Concetta says that she will teach her the ways of a "strega" who gives cures and advice on many things. Nona grows up and attends the convent school and the Academy of Stregas in the city. Nona eventually returns to the country to take her Grandma's place after she retires.

23. Dunrea, Oliver (2003). Ollie. New York: Houghton Mifflin Books.

Abstract:
An egg named Ollie does everything he can think of to keep from hatching. Two other geese want Ollie to hatch, but he refuses. Finally the geese tell him to not hatch. This gets Ollie motivated to hatch and break out of his shell.

24. Freschet, Bernice (1972). A web in the grass. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons.

Abstract:
A lonely spider spins a web in order to catch some food. The spider is careful not to be caught by a toad or an owl. She lays an egg sac and hundreds of spiderlings are produced. The babies, like their mother, spin webs and wait to capture food.

Abstract:
Gertie is a duck who likes people and wants to build her nest where there are a lot of people to see. She flies to the city and decides to build her nest by the river because there were many people on the bridge. The people really liked Gertie and after she lays her eggs and they hatch, the people move Gertie and her baby ducks where there are many new people around.
