Reach Out and Read (ROR) Reflections

Miami University students who enroll in PHS 242E: Personal Health for the Elementary School Teacher elect to participate in an academic service learning project called Reach Out and Read (ROR). ROR is a national health and literacy project that has been implemented locally with Oxford Pediatrics and Adolescents, Inc., Lane Public Library, Oxford Kiwanis, and Miami University. Each week preservice teachers in PHS 242E serve as volunteer readers to children (ages 6 months to 5 years) at Oxford Pediatrics while waiting with their parents and caregivers for their well-child check-ups. Preservice teachers then write a weekly reflection about their experiences. They also write an exit letter to a teacher colleague who may participate in the project the following semester. Selected students and their reflections are available below.
