The Instructional Materials Center (IMC) houses the library’s video collection and collects resources to support Education majors studying at Miami University. This includes literature for children and young adults, teacher materials to support and supplement PreK-12 instruction, and educational tests and measurements. IMC has also created resource guides to help identify materials of particular interest, e.g. award-winning books, multicultural resources, teacher web sites, etc. IMC is located on the Ground Floor of King Library.

If you have questions about children's literature, teacher materials, how to find a video, etc, please feel free to stop by, give us a call (513) 529-2116, or send us an email.

IMC Collection

  • Videos/Audio – The IMC houses nearly all of the videocassettes and DVDs available on the Oxford campus. Videos are retrieved by our staff upon request at the IMC circulation desk. The IMC supplies equipment for small group (2-3) in-library viewing of videos/DVDs (monitors, players, and headphones). IMC also loans audiocassette recorders. Information on loan periods and reserving/booking videos is available below.
  • Children’s and Young Adult Literature – The IMC collection includes over 18,000 picture books, fiction, and nonfiction titles written for children and young adults; book kits including book and audio/video tapes; paperback sets for use with reading groups or literature circles; and Big Book adaptations of popular picture books. (Check out our new titles!) If you're looking for book reviews or reading levels, be sure to try the Children's Literature Comprehensive Database.
  • Children’s Periodicals – The IMC subscribes to several periodicals geared toward K-12 students. These cover several subject areas including language arts, science, social studies, and sports. Current issues (3 years - present) are available for check out.
  • PreK-12 Curriculum Materials – The IMC has a variety of non-book materials for use in lesson and unit planning. Curriculum materials include educational games, primary source materials, posters, teaching units, manipulatives, models, charts, maps, transparencies, picture sets, puppets, CDs/cassettes, and kits.
  • IMC Books – These books are geared toward PreK-12 teachers, and are full of ideas and activities for PreK-12 classroom use in all different subject areas and different learning levels.
  • Textbooks – Our textbook collection covers all PreK-12 curricular areas. A variety of publishers and publication dates are included. Most sets include student/teacher editions, although we do have several supplemental materials (e.g. assessments, workbooks, etc.) as well.
  • Tests – Our test collection includes assessments used by professionals at the PreK-Adult levels to evaluate and diagnose students in academic and counseling settings. Tests are not currently included in the library catalog. A list of tests by title and by subject is available. IMC tests may only be checked out by faculty/ students associated with particular courses (EDP, EDT). They are not for general circulation.
  • Ellison Machine – The IMC provides access to an Ellison die-cut machine. Our cuts include lower and upper case letters, puzzle shapes, awards, and a variety of other school-related shapes. (Construction paper is not available for purchase at IMC.)

Videos

The Instructional Materials Center provides access to the library's video collection. Information on how to find videos is available.

Faculty may place videos on reserve. Items on course reserve will be used in-library by students unless a one or three day reserve is indicated. Only the faculty member reserving the material will have a one week circulation period for any items on in-library-use reserve; a one day circulation is applied to any other faculty and/or teaching assistants. To place a video on reserve, contact Mary Hubbard (529-1674 or hubbarmt@muohio.edu).

Faculty may also book videos for use in class. Booking ensures a video is available the day it is planned for use in class. Items booked for a certain date will not go out to anyone else on that date, and cannot be renewed over a time that conflicts with that date. To book a video, contact Mary Hubbard (529-1674 or hubbarmt@muohio.edu).

Most videos may be checked out for one week, but we do have a number of items that are only available to students for 2-hour periods. Students may view those videos in the IMC using our equipment. We do not have a large group viewing room at this time, but do allow small groups (2-3) of students to view together if possible. Videos marked in the catalog with IMC Reserve or IMC Clsd Stack are 2-hour items.

Search IMC

You can limit your search of the library catalog to materials in the IMC by using the advanced catalog search. Enter your keyword, author, or title in the search box and change the "WHERE Item is located" box from ANY to IMC. Then click the Search button. If you need to change or modify your search, it's usually easiest to begin again from the advanced catalog page. If you have problems searching or can't find what you need, please do not hesitate to ask a librarian.

Resource Guides

IMC has created several resource guides to help faculty and students find materials of particular interest. Guides include lists of award-winning books, foreign language materials, tips for finding multicultural literature, and more. The most popular guides include:
