UNITED STATES COLLECTION

The United States collection contains publications from U.S. government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of the Interior, Department of Labor, and Congress. Publications include small brochures, reports on agency programs and activities, statistical reports, research reports, technical reports, legislative proceedings, newsletters and periodicals. Publications are received in several formats including paper, microfiche, and CD-ROM's. Miami is a selective depository, receiving about 70% of the publications made available through the Federal Depository Library Program. Publications date back to the 1800's.

ARRANGEMENT

United States publications are arranged by the Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification system which groups publications together by issuing agency, rather than by subject. Publications are shelved alphabetically by the letters at the beginning of the call number, then numerically within each letter group. Microfiche is arranged by SuDoc numbers in the Government and Law microform cabinets. Censuses are shelved at the end of the first range of shelving. The Congressional Serial Set and current House and Senate reports and documents are shelved at the beginning of the first range of shelving.
